Had the exact same thoughts when I read "Homo Deus" and then "21 lessons for the XXI century" by Harari. I was like: "why on Earth are we discussing AI mitigation measures and so on when you've just told me I have no control over anything"?

Although I think it's hard to refute the case against free will, I think we are not hardwired to live in permanent consciousness of our absence of free will. If you manage to experience the absence of free will, you'll immediately feel paralysed, like a robot. So we just sweep it under the rug and continue life business as usual, because that's how we are hardwired to function, to think that people are responsible for what they do, to think that our choices matter, that they determine our life, etc, etc
